The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) has been useful for estimating urban population, density, monitoring human settlements, energy and electricity consumption, gas emissions, evaluation of impact of disasters, detecting fishing vessels. The DMSP Operational Line Scanner (OLS) produced 1km night-time scenes from 1992 and 2013, with global coverage. The DMSP Nightlights are an annual product indicating the average annual nightlight intensity.
