VIIRS Nighttime

VIIRS nighttime lights imagery is distributed by The Earth Observations Group (EOG) at NOAA/NGDC. The data is available as raw daily imagery or as mosaics that have been post-processed (i.e., to remove clouds, stray light and lunar illumination), and it is produced monthly or annually. The monthly nighttime lights data is of high quality and a good representation of average nighttime lights over the month.VIIRS data has been available since mid-2012. The daily nighttime lights products are far noisier and require extensive cleaning (e.g., stray light, moon illumination, cloud cover, etc.). The individual files are large and not projected (they include Ground Control Points), which adds an additional complication. The VIIRS day/night band has a resolution of approximately 750 meters per pixel, meaning that most of the zones only comprise several pixels at the most. As such, we are only able to obtain a fairly low-resolution estimate of observed light level for the region of interest.
